Partitioning your external HD using Disk Utility

Just this week, I posted an article about transferring Time Machine Backups between external HD's using Super Duper. I left a question there on what I plan to do with my old external HD with USB 2.0. Before I answer that, I'll post an article first on partitioning your external HD. You'll get a hint here on what I intend to do with my former HD.

Every Mac has a utility application for diagnosing, formatting and partitioning a hard drive called Disk Utility. We'll use this application in dividing my old external HD. So how do we partition using Disk Utility? Well, here are the steps:

1. I plug my external HD to my Mac and launch Disk Utility. The external HD should appear on the left hand panel of the application. As you'll see below, I've used this HD for my Time Machine backups (which I have transferred already to another external HD with Firewire using Super Duper). Disk Utility will show the current partition layout, name, format and size of the HD.
2. Then, I can select the number of partitions to divide my HD.

3. After selecting the number of partitions, I then assign a name, format, allocate size and partition scheme to them. Since I intend to use my external HD on Mac (OS X) and PC (Windows), I'll format the former in Mac OS Extended and the latter in ExFAT. I'll also be using a GUID Partition Table  (this will be the same across all partitions) since I'll utilize the HD in an Intel-based Mac.*

4. Finalize everything and when you're all set, just click on the Apply button to proceed with the partition. If you want to do it all over again, just click on Revert. In my case, I started with four partitions but eventually, I decided to trim it down to three. After completing the process, the partitions will appear and display as separate "hard disks" like what you can see below.
