The recent release of iOS 5.0 introduced battery problems for some owners of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. For this post, I'll be covering some steps you can do to save power for your iPhone 4S (some are applicable too for your iPhone 4). You can turn off some settings on your iPhone when they are not in use.
- Turn off Wifi and Location Services. This is easily accessible when you open Settings on your iPhone 4S.
- Turn off Cellular Data. This can be accessed thru Settings > General > Network.
- Turn off Bluetooth. This is enabled by default when you start your iPhone 4S. This can be accessed thru Settings > General > Bluetooth.
- If you don't travel regularly to other countries, disable automatic timezone detection. This can be accessed thru Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn off syncing via iCloud. This can be accessed thru Settings > iCloud.
- Minimize the brightness of your iPhone. I just enable auto brightness so it adjusts depending on the lighting. This can be accessed thru Settings > Brightness.
- Turn off Vibrate mode. I just enable vibrate when I put my iPhone on Silent mode. This can be accessed thru Settings > Sounds.
- Turn off Automatic Network Selection. This can be modified in Settings > Carrier. Select the local carrier that you use. In my experience, this saved battery life for my iPhone.
This definitely defeats the purpose of your iPhone which is to be connected to the network as much as possible. But with the recent battery issues still plaguing some iPhone 4S users, this is the conservative way to go. You don't need to turn off everything, just disable some of the settings that you do not use. iOS 5.0 (as well as 5.0.1) is still in it's early stages and it's next iterations hopefully can fix some of the problems iPhone users are experiencing.

Hi Carl, I agree with you about turning off the Automatic network to save the battery. (That's according to my observation)
ReplyDeleteMy only problem is, if I set it to manual carrier, it always come up with Network Lost popup whenever I lose signal. Do you have any idea how to disable it without having to go back to "Automatic" mode?
Hi Marto, thanks a lot for checking my blog. Unfortunately, I have limited information regarding your question. I just toggle Airplane mode to get my signal back. This also happens sometimes when you are in Automatic network. I really hope iOS 5.1 gets released soon. Maybe it has fixes to these network issues we encounter.
Deletethank you sir, check ko to kung working nga siya.. :)
ReplyDeleteNice Phil, let me know if it works on your iPhone.
DeleteMy suggestion is to Turn on Auto-Brightness. The iPhone has an ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the light around it (darker in dark places, brighter when there's more ambient light) to both save battery and make it easier to see. Turn Auto-Brightness on and you’ll save battery because your screen will need to use less power in dark places.
ReplyDeleteFind it in the Settings app -> Brightness & Wallpaper -> Auto-Brightness On.

Thanks for the additional input. I haven't specifically mentioned enabling auto brightness.
DeleteMost of us forget about the most basic: turn of the phone itself.
