iOS App Review: System Activity Monitor

Wouldn't it be great if you can monitor the applications that are utilizing the memory of your iOS device? Well, this was an application I just discovered because of the battery problems that initially plagued the iPhone 4S. A Macworld article has mentioned this application and it is a little similar to the Activity Monitor available on the Mac. System Activity Monitor has views for checking the Memory, Processes and Network used by your iOS device. It also has Settings containing the definition of terms available on the application. The application has served me great especially for monitoring the memory that is being consumed by my iPhone 4S. At first, I did not know how to fully close the application that I just used. I thought I had closed it properly but it's still running in the background. Applications running in the background consume a lot of free memory and battery life of my iPhone 4S.

For this post, I'd like to focus more on the Memory displayed by the application since this is directly connected to the battery life of your iOS device. These definitions are also available in the Settings of the application.
Memory: Memory displays the information about runtime and storage memory. Check RAM checks that the available RAM is error free. Not all RAM on the iPhone/iPad/iPod can be checked. Only RAM available to the app can be checked for errors.

Free Memory: This memory is not currently used by the device.

Wired Memory: This information cannot be moved to disk so it must stay in RAM. The amount depends on the applications you are using.

Active Memory: This information is currently in RAM and has recently been used.

Inactive Memory: This information has not recently been used but will remain in RAM until another applications needs more memory but no free memory is available. If called upon a process, this is quickly changed to Active memory; if it has been swapped to the hard disk, it will be moved back to RAM and marked as Active.

Page ins/ Page outs: "Page ins/outs" refers to the amount of information moved between RAM and the hard disk. This number is cumulative amount of data that iPhone OS has moved between RAM and disk space.
The application is worth the $0.99 download. It helped me a lot in monitoring the memory consumption of my iPhone 4S. Because of this too, I accidentally discovered how to close applications effectively. If you want to monitor running applications on your iOS device, download this application now.

System Activity Monitor is available thru this link and is compatible to an iPhone, an iPad and an iPod Touch running iOS 3.0 or later.

  1. According to me System Activity Monitor is the best feature for iPhone 4S because we can save our batteries after running this apps and we know that which application is still running in our iPhone.
