On my posts yesterday, I have shared some snapshots of my iPad mini and iPhone 4S before and after the upgrade to iOS 7. I have been playing with both devices to check out the features included in the upgrade. For this post, I'd be sharing what I like and what Apple could have improved in the latest OS.
What I like...
- Wallpapers, both Dynamic and Stills. They just look gorgeous on iOS 7 and the wallpapers pop out on the iPhone and iPad mini's screen.
- Cool transition after closing apps and unlocking your device which have replaced the effect of flying apps from corners. Some tech articles I've read compare this to the genie effect transition on the Mac when apps minimize to the Dock.
- Improved search. Apple just nailed this one. In the past, you can only do this by swiping all the way to the left of the home screen. Now, search can be made on any window just by swiping down on the screen.
- Organization of applications in just one folder. Before, you can only organise 16 applications in a folder, but now, you can store an infinite number of them in it.
What Apple could have improved...
- The default icons. Apple really could have done much better on this.
- While some aspects of the OS have been simplified, the status bar on the iPhone is cluttered. The vertical signal bars have been replaced by five circles to indicate the signal. I also noticed that an additional lightning icon is displayed when charging (see highlight below).
- Dictionaries should have been readily available. I just read from TUAW that you need to download your preferred dictionary and I just verified it.
- Apple should have retained the Tap to Tweet and Tap to Post in the Notification Center. It's just a handy shortcut when I need to post anything on Twitter and Facebook.
- The settings in the Control Center could have been customisable similar to Jailbreak Tweaks like SBSettings and NCSettings.
iOS 7 runs smoothly on my iPad mini but I notice slight lags on my iPhone 4S. It's still decent and I hope the next updates to the OS could make the experience much smoother on my phone. My 4S is two years old so I'm already expecting it.
iOS 7 is a great update so you shouldn't think twice upgrading to it. Jony Ive is just starting his touch on user interface design. Expect a lot more improvement from him in future iOS releases or if we're lucky enough, in the next updates to iOS 7. Download it now over the air on your device or on iTunes.
