The release of iOS 5.0 allowed independence over iTunes and over the air software update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The iPhone 4S and iPod Touch with iOS 5.0 can be setup without the need for connecting to iTunes. This is definitely a big step for Apple since users who bought these iOS devices may not have PC's or Macs where iTunes is installed for initial sync. And probably the next biggest update for this iOS is the capability to perform software update wirelessly.

The software update done over the air has a small file size compared to when updating via iTunes. You have to be connected to a wifi network though instead of 3G and at least ensure that you have enough battery life. OTA is considered a delta update compared to the full update done in iTunes. I just performed a software update last Sunday from iOS 5.0 to 5.0.1 because the latest software update that is supposed to fix battery problems has introduced another issue in the form of network problems. The re-release of iOS 5.0.1 last Thursday prompted me to perform the update already. I'm really worried while doing the update but it subsided when I successfully downloaded and installed the software. I basically just left my iPhone 4S to download and install the software. The 55 MB software update downloaded and installed for 30 minutes. After the download, my iPhone restarted and installed the new firmware. Here are some snapshots I've taken during the download and before the software installation.
