Preserving battery life after upgrading to iOS 6.0

Last year, I've posted an article on saving battery life for your iPhone 4S. A number of iPhone 4S users encountered problems saving battery life with iOS 5.0. This year's iPhone 5 though has better battery performance compared to the iPhone 4S but not all are upgrading their iPhones. So this post are for those users who want to preserve some battery life after upgrading their devices to iOS 6.0. I'm using an iPhone 4S for these tips but they should also be applicable to an iPad or iPod Touch.

  • Turn off Wifi and Bluetooth. This is easily accessible when you open Settings on your iPhone 4S.

  • Turn off Cellular Data. This can be accessed thru Settings > General > Cellular.

  • Turn off some Location Services as you don't need to be located all the time on your applications. This can be accessed thru Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

  • If you don't travel regularly to other countries, disable automatic timezone detection. This can be accessed thru Settings > General > Date & Time.

  • Turn off some applications that sync to iCloud. This can be accessed thru Settings > iCloud.

  • Reduce the brightness of your iPhone. I just enabled auto brightness so it adjusts depending on the lighting. This can be accessed thru Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper.

  • Turn off Vibrate mode. I just enabled vibrate when I put my iPhone on Silent mode. This can be accessed thru Settings > Sounds.

  • Turn off Automatic Network Selection. This can be modified in Settings > Carrier. Select the local carrier that you use.

  • Turn off some notifications. Based from experience, if you only enable select notifications on the Lock Screen, you can preserve some battery life. You can just enable Sounds so you still get alerted.

Again, you don't need to turn off everything as they defeat the purpose of owning an iPhone. But if you need to save some battery power, this is the way to go. As for my iPhone 4S, battery performance is still the same after upgrading to iOS 6.0. It can be on standby for more than a day even with playing games, surfing or just sending SMS.
